01 Welcome Inaugural Edition

(Mostly) Same blokes. Same trophy. New course.

It started as a long weekend with golf bags. Four years on, fourteen of us, three courses, one cup. Yarrawonga is host for 2026.

What began as a cheeky mates trip — a few blokes, a golf bag, and the optimistic belief that a weekend away would somehow improve everyone's handicap — has turned into an actual fixture on the calendar. Four years in, someone decided each year's instalment deserves its own name. This year's — hosted at Yarrawonga — is The Wonga Cup.

Fourteen players. Three days. Three courses. One trophy. The format has evolved, the field has matured (in numbers if not always in conduct), and the stories have stacked up into something resembling a genuine tournament history. Yarrawonga throws three different courses at the field this year — the Murray Course, Black Bull, and Lake Course — and none of them care how many trophies are on the shelf.

From Friday's match play battles to Saturday's scramble chaos and Sunday's individual Stableford grind, there are points up for grabs at every turn. The Wonga Cup is awarded to the winning team. Individual glory beckons in the form of Longest Drive, Nearest the Pin, and the not-entirely-coveted Silly Goose Hat. May the best team win — and may everyone else at least have a story worth telling at dinner.

The flagship layout at Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort, designed by Peter Thomson (five-time Open champion) and Michael Wolveridge. The Murray Course opened in 1986 and winds through century-old river red gums and native bushland on the sandy flats of the Murray River - an out-and-back routing that keeps the river scenery in play throughout.

Generous fairways flatter off the tee, but the undulating greens and well-positioned water features make scoring harder than the card suggests. Ranked among Australia's Top 100 public access courses, it's a fitting stage for Day 1 match play.

Black Bull

Designed by Peter Thomson and Ross Perrett, Black Bull opened with 9 holes in 2010 and was extended to a full 18-hole championship layout in 2015. Set on the banks of Lake Mulwala, it plays as the longest of the three courses and demands consistent iron play into large, well-bunkered greens. The slope rating of 133 tells the story.

Holes 4, 5 and 6 are the self-styled Bull Ring — three holes that have ended more than one team's Saturday before the back nine even starts.

Format · Team Scramble
Each team splits into a group of 4 and a group of 3. In each grouping (4v4 and 3v3) the team with the better score wins points equal to the stroke differential. Whichever team's combined 4+3 score is better also takes a flat 5pt bonus.

The Lake Course

Also designed by Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge, the Lake Course sits alongside Lake Mulwala and plays as the most strategically demanding of the three layouts. Its 56 bunkers are placed to punish any deviation from the correct line - tee shots must be placed, not simply hit, and the approach game will separate the field.

The shorter overall length makes it the ideal Stableford closer: higher handicappers can post solid scores when the bunkers are avoided, but the sand traps are everywhere and they claim ambition regularly.

All 14 players. Points by finishing position: 1st=14, 2nd=13, 3rd=12 … down to 14th=1. Tied players share averaged points. Each player's points go to their team total.
03 Schedule Three Days

Three days. Each a different game.

Friday is match play on the Murray. Saturday is a scramble at Black Bull. Sunday is Stableford on the Lake. The Cup is presented after Sunday's round.

The first twelve arrivals tee off at noon. Six 1v1 singles matches.

Teams are set by Captain's Draft on Friday morning — the two peer-vote captains pick in snake order until all players are assigned. Six singles matches — 12 points up for grabs. Each match splits into a front 9 and back 9, worth 1pt apiece — 0.5pt each if a nine is halved. Cayden Woods & Ben Lepore join the field Saturday morning.
